About White Swan Piscatorials

The White Swan Piscatorials caters for the needs of the individual angler. There are no contests held on Club waters. Membership is limited to a maximum of 750 voting members, this assures that there will always be prime water available for the members individual requirements even at weekends!

Club history

The Club was founded in 1902 for the purpose of providing fishing for all anglers at a subscription rate within the reach of all. At that time there was only one angling society in Birmingham, whose sole object was the renting of waters for its members. But as the subscription to this society was £3 3s 0d. per annum, it was outside the range of many anglers who required waters at a reasonable annual subscription, that would be available whenever they care to fish them. This the White Swan Piscatorials set out to do at a very low subscription.

Messrs. The late Harry W. Miller and Warwick Bagley were of the opinion that a successful club could be run to meet these conditions. They called a meeting which was held at the White Swan Hotel, Edmund Street, Birmingham, and started the current club with a subscription of 5s per annum. Membership increased rapidly until it reached upwards of 400 in 1913. (This figure was reached again in the year 1935). And then came the War, and like all other clubs our membership decreased until at the end of 1918 it was only about 200. To enable us to keep the fisheries we rented it was found necessary to increase the annual subscription.

Mr. H. W. Miller was elected president and held that office until his death. Mr. Warwick Bagley was elected Secretary and held that appointment for 27 years. Mr. W. Proctor was the first treasurer; and the first Committee included among others, Messrs. B.Bennett, Walter Proctor and P.A.Barnes. Mr. C.Russell followed Mr Warwick Bagley as Secretary, and held this appointment for only a comparatively short period. He was followed by Major  S.H.Price and it is due to the progressive policy and interest taken in the Club by him that we owe a great deal of our current prosperous condition. Unfortunately, Major Price left the district in 1946, and died in Bristol in 1951.

The chief rule of the new society was that no contest should be held and the whole of the funds devoted to club purposes: viz., renting, leasing and buying water and necessary club expenses.

o go back a bit. Success attended the efforts of the founders from the start. Water was rented on the River Avon at Bredon, later followed by water on the Severn at Bewdley, on the Tern at Crudgington, and on the Mease at Harlaston near Tamworth. We still hold all of these waters; in addition we have new waters on the Rivers Teme and Arrow. Thus giving members fishing of various kinds on seven rivers. There are trout in our waters on the Rivers Teme, Severn and Arrow, and plenty of coarse fish in all waters. The River Teme and Arrow are well known grayling rivers.

Since 1931, many thousands of young trout have been placed in the River Severn at Bewdley; and our waters on the Teme and Arrow have been stocked yearly with young trout. It can safely be said that the club offers fairly good trout fishing to its members. The policy of stocking our waters with trout was adopted as the result of many enquiries for trout fishing from people who could not afford the very high prices charged for this class of fishing. The policy has proved successful.

The Officers and Committee look forward with every confidence to the future, and thank all the members for their help and support given in the past, which has helped make their task a pleasant one. They only ask for the same loyalty in the future, and that if it is given, our club is assured of a very successful career.
